We stayed in a Japanese-style room with a clever table and access to a shared bathroom, providing all the conveniences we needed. the hotel's location was perfect, right near Yudanaka station and the iconic snow monkey park. Plus, there was a charming farmer's market nearby for exploring.

There was good choice of good meals. Got large and huge room with our own toilet when arrived, thoroughly enjoyed that. It had exceptionally nice location, near to the park entrance and a supermarket and Yudanaka station.

It was fantastic. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. It is close to the station yet you feel you are in the countryside. The outdoor spa is lovely. Our room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very tasty and served in a vacant room opposite our own. The owner gave us a gift of a huge apple each as we left. They allowed us to return after we had visited the snow monkey park, and use the onsen free of charge. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

The location was fantastic! Very close to the station (3 minute walk). The staff was very friendly and welcoming. We arrived in the late afternoon and they were more than happy to give us a quick ride to the monkey park. We ended up walking back from the monkey park to the hotel (about 3 miles) and the walk was through what felt like a quaint village. We stumbled upon a family owned sushi restaurant and had an absolutely fantastic meal! When we got back to the hotel we were able to enjoy the private onsen room! Would definitely recommend this hotel!

The family was great and gave us a crash course in Japanese culture and ways. It was our first night in Japan (well after sleeping in Haneda airport) and our first time sleeping in a ryokan. We wish we would have selected to purchase a dinner there. It is normally an area for skiers, so many restaurants appeared to be closed. We still found a small restaurant that smelled of smoke but we had an extremely good bowl of soba. We were hestitant about sleeping on futons, but they were actually extremely comfortable. It got a little chilly but not as bad as our stay in Nikko the following weekend. But, it was nice to stay in a peaceful place for a change. There are two private onsens available and one public. Typically baths are taken at night and we fell asleep before we could get access to the nicer private onsen. We woke up at 4:30am and I think there was a group of older Japanese Buddhist guys that pretty much took up the private onsen so we had to use the other one which looked much more run down. But after we started rinsing ourselves with the hose, it wasn't that bad and was actually kind of fun. The hot spa although was freaking hot! I mean hot! I think there was a faucet to put in cool water, but there is a constant drip of hot water in there. And there was algae built up on the walls because it's always steamy in there. It's due for a remodel, but again, it wasn't as bad or had that dirty feeling as we initially thought. I finally dipped into the onsen and sweated out the cold/fever I had picked up on my 12.5 hour flight there. In short, we would definetly stay there again. Matsu, their son, also gave us a ride to the Snow Monkey Park and we caught a bus ride back that he pointed out. He speaks very little English-one word clues, but it's enough to get by. The other do not at all, but still talk to you like you know Japanese! Just give the older man a high five. He's super nice. Also, bring a small gift from home.
The Ryokan itself was very homey. So please don't let the following comments deter you, but I say them to provide you with our own initial first impressions: The alternative private spa/bathing facility is due for a remodel and a good scrub down because their is algae and some mold growing on the walls. I wish we could have reserved the nicer private onsen as advertised, but it was still a fun first-time experience for us. The website makes this place look very 'new' but it's not. There are broken tiles, worn rug, and in America would be 10 years overdue for a remodel...but after we got settled, none of that mattered. So don't let this turn you away. We didn't know what to expect when going to Japan and kind of like it that way when we travel. We would definitely stay here again, although the trip there is really long and costly. The Snow Monkeys were cool to see, but it really is only worth staying there a day unless you plan to do some hiking or skiing. It's still a beautiful place and calm compared to Tokyo.

The staff were extremely helpful and very friendly. If you are visiting the Jigokudani Snow Monkeys Park, you will get driven to the gate of the park. And, the dinner is amazing.

The best of this hotel are the staff. This ryokan is being managed personally by a family, which is very warm and helpful whenever recommendations or directions were needed. The Onsens which are for exclusive use of the guests, are very clean, visually appealing and facilities for indoor or outdoor baths are offered. Rooms are big and well equiped. This hotel has been one of the highlights of our trip, no wonder why it appears so often in travel recommendation websites. Highly recomended

Apart from the language barrier, where the owners coped with our non-existent Japanese. This hotel was brilliant. The staff, the accomodation was great, the onsen, the little town with not much to do, the coutryside was beautiful. You need to hire a car and visit ruralJapan - if you do, start here. Two weeks in Japan, 3 nights here - all five of us thought this was the best.
